Ron Paul for 2012?

At the recent Conservative Political Action Conference, CPAC, Ron Paul won the straw poll for republican presidential candidate in 2012. The choice of CPAC poll respondents certainty reflects the increased emphasis on fiscal responsibility and limited government in among conservatives and republicans.

This renewed emphasis about these issues is great to see. However, is Ron Paul the best choice for the republican nomination in 2012? One big red flag that probably a lot of people missed when voting for Paul in the straw poll was his age. He was born on August 20 of 1935 making him currently 74 years old. If he were to become the republican nominee and win the election he would be 77 on the day he was inaugurated.

With so many concerns over the age of John McCain in the last election, will a candidate that will be 5 years older than McCain would on inauguration be electable? As great as it is to see a candidate with such a strong record and rhetoric on limited government and fiscal responsibility republicans must also think about electability when choosing a candidate for 2012.

Interesting Grant! I was kind of thinking the same thing about him…although I was surprised when I found out his age, because he doesn’t seem as old as he actually is.

But as for the straw poll results, almost half of the people who voted were students, and I feel as though a lot of young people have been swept up into the “Ron Paul Revolution”, in a way similar to how young people fell so easily for Obama (although my feelings for the two of them are totally opposite). In a poll in which students weren’t half the voters, I wonder if Ron Paul still would have done as well.

Also America fell for the young, “handsome” man with the adoring wife and children in the last election…lets hope we’ve learned enough to pay attention to policy, no matter what the age of the candidate is, instead of a pretty face that spouts out words like hope and change.

Ron Paul and the political positions he purported during the 2007-8 Republican primary is the reason I got into politics and devoted my life to the liberty movement.

Ron Paul is old without question.

If you are interested in his viewpoints, I offer you a very adequate substitute: Former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson.

I think that Ron Paul is not a possible choice in 2012, but the fact that so many young people does show a shift in the future of the Republican Party. It might not end up being exactly like Ron Paul, but it is going to move that way

Gary Johnson is Ron Paul’s heir apparent in 2012.
