Time Magazine and Today’s Women
In the November 16 issue of Time Magazine the front page article was on Women. There was entire expose on today’s women versus yesterday’s (The 1960 Homemaker). As a woman it was good to see the statistics on increased educational opportunities, equal pay, leadership position in corporate America and government roles. We women…We Americans should be proud of these statistics.
However, even with all of this success I believe as women, we have forgotten one our greatest assets or should I say privileges. That privilege is to bring life into the world. Yes call me old fashion, but only I (being a women) can have creation take place within me. But sadly this has been taken from women.
The pill which was suppose to liberate women from enslavement to pregnancy has only created women to be utilized for pleasure with regrets. With the pill taken such a prominent place in the American bedroom it has allowed men to lie to us each time they enter into an act which is suppose to say “I give you everything”. Except in reality it says ” I’m using you for pleasure, but I take no responsibility for you.”
My question is have we robbed ourselves of our greatest privilege? I believe we have. Can you argue against the correlation between the insertion of the pill into American lifestyle and the increase in the divorce rate? Yes, I do agree children are a huge sacrifice and can take anyone away from their goals in life. But have we sold our souls for what we call “being loved”?

So true! By ‘freeing themselves from the burden of potential pregnancy,’ women allow themselves to become used by men. In the words of Red Forman (That 70′s Show), “who is willing to buy the cow if the milk is sold for free?” The birth control pill has allowed men to simply use women without having to take responsibility for them.
As you also stated, bringing life into the world is a privilege held only by women. In an effort to become more like men, women are losing their own femininity. Instead of embracing their procreative ability, women have rejected it in favor of a “no strings attached” relationship. Can a man really love you if he doesn’t accept you, all of you? Women have been told more than a bucket full of lies, in that liberation from one’s procreativity will result in happiness. The acceptance of the pill into America’s bedrooms has lead to the destruction of marriages and relationships, a loss of respect for women as more than playthings, and hurts only women.
It was the possibility of pregnancy that kept infidelities to a minimum before birth control and other contraceptives were presented into modern society. With this possibility suppressed, what barrier is there to keep infidelity at bay? The correlation between the pill and the divorce rate is unmistakable. Nowadays, the marriage/divorce rate is 50%. What does that say about the people of today? That we have allowed selfishness and other evils to infiltrate the very core of our society-the family? I’d think so.
As women, we have been fighting for equality for a long time. The battle has been hard, but the persistence and the conviction of our ancestors has won many victories. This fight for ‘educational opportunities, equal pay, leadership positions in corporate America and government roles’ has been undermined. How are we to demand respect from others when we do not give it to ourselves? By allowing ourselves to accept this lie and be used, our femininity is compromised, as is our fight for equality. I urge women to rally under the banner of true feminism-not the corrupt jargon being shoved down our throats by an agenga-driven media.
Whoever thought that so much destruction could come from one little pill?
Maddy, you hit the nail on the head!! So many people can’t understand why Catholics don’t believe in birth control, but you really explained it beautifully. You also raised the issue of why so many marriages and relationships fail so frequently, I think people are totally afraid to look at this as a legitimate reason!
